Euromoney names Nigerian lender Africa’s top bank as strong profitability, digital transformation and governance reinforce its continental influence
Zenith Bank Plc has been named Africa’s Best Bank and Nigeria’s Best Bank at the prestigious Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2026, reinforcing the lender’s position as one of the continent’s strongest financial institutions and highlighting the growing global recognition of Nigerian banking excellence.
The awards, presented at The Peninsula London on 16 July, place Zenith Bank among an elite group of global financial institutions recognised for outstanding performance, strategic execution, digital innovation, risk management and customer value creation. The recognition also marks the second consecutive year that the bank has retained the title of Nigeria’s Best Bank, while securing Euromoney’s highest continental banking honour.
Widely regarded as one of the banking industry’s most respected international awards programmes, the Euromoney Awards for Excellence evaluate financial institutions across multiple performance indicators, including profitability, innovation, governance, operational efficiency, sustainability and market impact. This year’s competition attracted more than 770 submissions from leading global banks, including HSBC, Morgan Stanley, Citibank, Barclays, Standard Bank and DBS Bank.
Performance underpins recognition
The latest recognition comes against the backdrop of another year of strong financial performance for Zenith Bank. For the 2025 financial year, the bank reported gross earnings of ₦4.19 trillion, representing a six per cent increase year-on-year, while profit after tax reached ₦1.04 trillion. The bank also improved asset quality by reducing its non-performing loan ratio from 4.7 per cent to 3.8 per cent, demonstrating continued discipline in risk management.
Zenith further strengthened investor confidence through a record dividend payout of ₦10.00 per share, amounting to approximately ₦410.69 billion, representing a 100 per cent increase over the previous year’s dividend distribution.
Alongside its financial performance, the bank has continued investing heavily in digital banking platforms, artificial intelligence, transaction banking and cross-border financial services as part of its long-term strategy to strengthen its pan-African operations and support regional trade.
Management dedicates award to stakeholders
Reacting to the awards, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Adaora Umeoji, described the recognition as validation of the bank’s long-standing commitment to excellence. “We are deeply honoured by these recognitions from Euromoney. Being recognised as Africa’s Best Bank and Nigeria’s Best Bank reflects the trust of our customers, the dedication of our workforce and our unwavering commitment to building a truly African global financial institution.”
She noted that the awards would encourage the institution to continue creating value for customers while expanding financial inclusion and supporting business growth across Africa. Umeoji also acknowledged the role of financial regulators across the jurisdictions where the bank operates, describing their support as instrumental to the institution’s continued success. She dedicated the awards to Zenith Bank founder Jim Ovia, whose vision she credited with laying the foundation for the bank’s enduring culture of excellence.
Global recognition continues
The Euromoney honours add to a growing portfolio of international recognitions earned by Zenith Bank over the past decade.
Earlier this year, The Banker ranked Zenith Bank as Nigeria’s number one bank by Tier-1 Capital for the seventeenth consecutive year in its Top 1000 World Banks ranking. The institution has also received multiple honours from Global Finance, World Finance, International Banker and Ethical Boardroom for excellence in digital banking, corporate governance, sustainability and commercial banking.
The consistency of these recognitions reflects the bank’s ability to combine strong financial performance with disciplined governance and continuous investment in technology and innovation.
The BrandiQ Perspective
Zenith Bank’s latest recognition is not simply another corporate award. It is evidence that brand reputation in banking is increasingly built on execution rather than advertising.
Financial institutions occupy one of the most trust-sensitive sectors of the economy. Customers entrust banks not only with their money but also with their personal information, business transactions and long-term financial aspirations. Consequently, a bank’s brand is ultimately judged by the strength of its governance, operational resilience, technological capability and financial performance.
Zenith Bank has consistently positioned itself around these fundamentals. Rather than relying solely on promotional campaigns, the bank has built a reputation through sustained profitability, disciplined risk management, digital transformation and strong corporate governance. International recognition from respected institutions such as Euromoney therefore becomes more than a trophy – it becomes independent validation of the brand’s strategic direction.
The award also reflects a broader shift taking place within African banking. Increasingly, the continent’s leading banks are no longer competing only within their domestic markets. They are competing for international capital, multinational clients and regional trade opportunities. Recognition from globally respected institutions enhances credibility with investors, correspondent banks and international business partners.
BrandiQ Analysis
The Euromoney recognition demonstrates that financial performance and brand equity are becoming increasingly inseparable. In today’s banking environment, sustained profitability reinforces customer confidence, while strong governance and operational discipline strengthen institutional reputation. Together, they create a virtuous cycle in which financial success enhances brand value and brand trust supports continued business growth.
The awards also highlight the growing importance of digital transformation as a competitive differentiator. Zenith Bank’s continued investment in artificial intelligence, digital banking platforms and transaction banking reflects a broader industry reality: the future of banking will increasingly be defined by technological capability rather than branch networks alone. Banks that successfully integrate digital innovation with operational excellence are likely to strengthen both customer loyalty and shareholder value.
Another significant implication lies in the role of corporate governance. International banking awards increasingly place substantial emphasis on governance, risk management and institutional resilience alongside financial metrics. Zenith’s repeated recognition across governance-focused award programmes suggests that governance is no longer viewed simply as a regulatory obligation but as a strategic asset capable of strengthening investor confidence and long-term competitiveness.
The recognition equally reinforces the importance of pan-African ambition. As the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) expands cross-border commerce, financial institutions capable of supporting regional payments, trade finance and multinational banking relationships will enjoy strategic advantages. Zenith Bank’s continued investment in transaction banking and regional connectivity positions it to benefit from this evolving continental landscape.
Finally, the awards illustrate a broader branding lesson for corporate Africa. Reputation cannot be manufactured through communications alone. It must be earned through consistent execution, measurable performance and disciplined leadership. International recognition is most meaningful when it reflects years of sustained organisational excellence rather than isolated achievements.
What Nigerian Banks Should Learn
Zenith Bank’s latest achievement reinforces an important lesson for Nigeria’s banking industry. In an increasingly competitive financial landscape, sustainable leadership will depend less on size and more on institutional quality. Profitability, innovation, governance, customer trust and technological capability are becoming the defining pillars of banking competitiveness. Institutions that consistently excel across these dimensions are more likely to earn both market leadership and international recognition.
BrandiQ Verdict
Zenith Bank’s emergence as Africa’s Best Bank is more than a corporate milestone; it is a reflection of the increasing maturity and global competitiveness of African financial institutions. The recognition demonstrates that disciplined execution, digital innovation, strong governance and long-term strategic consistency remain the foundations upon which enduring banking brands are built. As African finance becomes more integrated and technology-driven, the institutions that combine financial strength with trusted leadership will define the continent’s next chapter of banking excellence.
