The organization secured the 2025 Pinnacle Awards (Platinum) in the Telecoms and Wireless category for Digital Inclusion and Accessibility Champion, as well as the 2026 Merit Award (Gold) for its work in addressing the digital divide.

The Pinnacle Awards is widely regarded as a leading global program that recognizes innovation and excellence across industries, particularly in fast-evolving sectors such as telecommunications.

“The telecom and wireless sector continues to set the pace for innovation, connecting people and businesses worldwide,” said Katie Lang, Executive Director of the Pinnacle Awards. “We are proud to recognize organizations that exemplify ingenuity, reliability, and impact in one of the most dynamic industries globally.”

Similarly, the Merit Awards highlighted the initiative’s role in shaping the future of connectivity.

“This year’s winners reflect excellence across the ecosystem—demonstrating the technologies and strategies shaping the future of communications,” said Marie Zander, Executive Director of the Merit Awards.

Bridging Africa’s Digital Divide

Launched in 2025, Smartphone For All was established with a mission to bridge Africa’s digital divide by providing affordable smartphones, connectivity solutions, and AI-enabled services to underserved populations.

The initiative is built on the belief that lack of digital access limits opportunities in education, employment, healthcare, and financial inclusion.

“Our mission is to close that gap, one device at a time, and build Africa’s largest digital inclusion platform,” said Babatunde Osho, Founder and CEO of Smartphone For All.

“The digital divide is not just a technology gap—it’s an opportunity gap. Without access to smartphones, millions are cut off from essential services and their ability to participate in the modern economy,” he added.

Strategic Partnerships Driving Adoption

To accelerate adoption, Smartphone For All partners with mobile network operators (MNOs) to provide affordable smartphones to users still on legacy 2G and 3G networks.

The initiative launched its first major rollout with MTN in South Africa in May 2025.

Under the program:

  • Smartphones are offered at ZAR 99 (approximately $5)
  • The initial rollout targets 1.2 million devices
  • The program is designed to run over a one-year period

The initiative aims to expand into other key African markets, including:

  • Nigeria
  • Ghana
  • Kenya
  • Tanzania
  • Côte d’Ivoire

Economic Impact and Policy Support

The push for digital inclusion aligns with broader economic goals across Africa.

According to the Economist Intelligence Unit, a 10 percent increase in broadband connectivity can drive:

  • 1.4 percent GDP growth in low- and middle-income countries
  • 1.2 percent GDP growth in high-income economies

Governments are increasingly supporting this transition.

In South Africa, for example:

  • New 2G/3G device activations were banned from December 31, 2024
  • A full network shutdown is planned by December 31, 2027
  • Tax reductions on certain smartphones have been introduced to boost adoption

These policies are designed to accelerate migration to 4G and next-generation networks, improving both connectivity and economic productivity.

Unlocking Value Across the Ecosystem

Beyond consumer access, the initiative delivers broader benefits across the telecom ecosystem.

For mobile network operators:

  • Improved spectrum efficiency
  • Reduced reliance on legacy networks
  • Increased data consumption

For governments and regulators:

  • Enhanced digital inclusion
  • Improved productivity
  • Expanded access to digital services

A Vision for Africa’s Digital Future

According to Jeff Miller, Director at Smartphone For All, the initiative represents more than a commercial venture.

“Smartphone For All is not just a business—it is a movement powering Africa into the next phase of development,” he said.

“Digital access is the foundation of inclusion in commerce, wellbeing, and civic engagement. The pathway to growth for Africa lies in bringing more people into the digital ecosystem across finance, education, healthcare, and trade.”

Looking Ahead

As Africa accelerates its digital transformation, initiatives like Smartphone For All are expected to play a critical role in expanding access to technology and unlocking new economic opportunities.

With strong backing from industry partners, supportive government policies, and growing demand for connectivity, the initiative is positioning itself at the forefront of efforts to build a more inclusive digital future across the continent.
