Nigeria’s push to reposition natural gas as the cornerstone of its energy transition strategy is gaining measurable traction.

Production has increased from 6.8 billion cubic feet per day in 2023 to 7.5 billion cubic feet per day in 2025, with projections targeting 12 billion cubic feet per day by 2030, according to Ed Ubong, Coordinating Director of the Decade of Gas Secretariat.

Speaking at the Decade of Gas and World Bank Ministerial Roundtable in Abuja, Ubong attributed this growth to improved ecosystem collaboration among government, regulators, and investors.

“We have seen gas production rise from about 6.8 billion cubic feet per day in 2023 to about 7.5 billion cubic feet per day in 2025. This progress is largely driven by stronger collaboration among government institutions, regulators, investors, and industry players,” he said.

The initiative, part of Nigeria’s “Decade of Gas” programme (2021–2030), is designed to unlock over 200 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves and reposition the sector as a driver of industrialisation, cleaner energy adoption, and economic growth.

Critical to this ambition is infrastructure. The country has identified 16 priority pipeline projects requiring about $22bn in funding, underscoring the scale of investment needed to translate policy into performance. From a strategic standpoint, Nigeria is not only targeting domestic energy sufficiency but also positioning itself as a regional gas hub, with projects such as the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline expected to enhance cross-border energy integration.
