Dangote Cement Plant, Obajana, has commenced its 2025 Sustainability Week with a series of vibrant activities that celebrate sportsmanship, education, and community partnership under the theme “Sustainable Progress: Celebrating Growth and Partnerships.”

The annual event, which began on October 24, has been expanded this year to include a broader range of programmes aimed at promoting holistic community development, according to a statement from the firm on Wednesday.

The opening ceremony set the tone for a week of engagement and collaboration, with participants drawn from Dangote Cement’s workforce and surrounding host communities. Central to the festivities was a football tournament that captured the spirit of teamwork and friendly competition.

The grand finale of the tournament, held on October 29, 2025, at the Obajana Academy Field, saw the Oyo Community Football Team emerge as champions after a thrilling 1–0 victory over Dangote Cement Transport.

The match was the culmination of several days of exciting games featuring teams from the Dangote Cement Obajana Plant, Dangote Cement Transport, and host communities.

The football event was designed not only to promote physical wellness and recreation but also to strengthen relationships between employees and community members—fostering mutual respect and unity.

The final match drew an enthusiastic crowd and was attended by senior management, including Plant Director, Mr Azad Nawabuddin; CGM Maintenance, Mr Panjala Sreedar; CGM Production, Mr John Gwong; and GM Special Duties, Mr Ademola Adeyemi, among others.

The ceremony concluded with applause and commendations from participants and guests, who praised the initiative for reinforcing Dangote Cement’s longstanding values of collaboration, inclusion, and sustainable community development.

Complementing the sports programme was an Inter-School Spelling Bee and Quiz Competition that attracted ten secondary schools from the host communities. The competition offered young learners a platform to showcase their academic abilities and intellectual curiosity.

After several rounds of intense competition, Golden Vessels Academy, Obajana, emerged as the Spelling Bee champion. The event highlighted the company’s commitment to nurturing education and intellectual development among young people, encouraging them to pursue excellence in academics and leadership.

In his address during the launch, Plant Director Azad Nawabuddin explained the thinking behind the company’s expanded Sustainability Week programming.

“Our investment in sports infrastructure and programming represents a fundamental commitment to the holistic well-being of our community members,” he said. “The football tournament we witnessed today does much more than provide entertainment – it builds character, teaches valuable life lessons, and creates enduring bonds between our organization and the communities we serve. These relationships, forged on the playing field, translate into stronger, more collaborative partnerships in all aspects of our community engagement.”

Head of HAM-Admin/HR, Mr Peter Agba, also underscored the company’s strategic focus on combining physical and intellectual development.

“Our simultaneous focus on sporting activities and educational initiatives like the Spelling Bee competition represents a deliberate strategy to nurture both the physical and intellectual capabilities of our community members,” Agba said. “We believe this comprehensive approach – engaging youth through sports while stimulating their minds through academic competitions – creates the foundation for sustainable community growth and empowerment.”

The successful launch of the 2025 Sustainability Week sets the pace for a lineup of events that include environmental initiatives, health awareness campaigns, and skills development workshops. This year’s expanded programme reflects Dangote Cement’s evolving approach to sustainability—one that recognizes the interconnected nature of physical health, mental well-being, education, and environmental stewardship.

The company reiterated its commitment to continuous engagement through quarterly sporting events and regular educational initiatives, ensuring that community empowerment remains a year-round effort rather than a one-time celebration.

As the week unfolds, Dangote Cement remains steadfast in its mission to drive meaningful progress through collaboration, innovation, and responsible corporate citizenship. By integrating sports and education into its sustainability framework, the company continues to demonstrate how businesses can foster unity, nurture talent, and create lasting social impact in the communities where they operate.
