Strong Meta revenue growth underscores the strength of its advertising operations, while rising expenses and major legal charges complicate the picture for investors and business leaders.

Meta Platforms reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $64.6 billion, an increase of 26 per cent from $51.24 billion in the same quarter a year earlier, according to results published on October 21. The Meta revenue growth figure is the headline, but the detail beneath it is more complicated.

The company also reported net income of $9.86 billion, compared with $2.71 billion a year earlier. However, costs and expenses rose 68 per cent to $51.61 billion, while operating income fell to $12.99 billion from $20.54 billion. The results included a $9.89 billion charge associated with an agreement relating to litigation brought by US state attorneys general concerning teen mental health and social media.

Meta said the quarter also marked milestones in its artificial-intelligence strategy, including the launch of its Muse and Muse Wonder models. The company continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure and products as it seeks to strengthen its position in the technology market.

How Meta Revenue Growth Keeps Advertising Central to the Business

Meta’s financial performance matters to marketers because the company’s platforms remain important channels for digital advertising, audience engagement and customer acquisition.

Meta revenue growth indicates that the company continues to generate substantial commercial activity across its business. For advertisers, the relevant question is how platform changes, AI tools and audience behaviour affect campaign performance and the cost of reaching customers.

AI can support advertising operations through creative development, targeting, campaign optimisation and customer interaction. These capabilities may help businesses produce more variations of advertising content and adapt campaigns more quickly.

However, advertisers should not assume that platform-level revenue growth guarantees improved returns for every campaign. A platform can expand its overall advertising business while individual advertisers experience different results depending on their markets, offers, competition and campaign quality.

AI Investment Comes with Substantial Costs

Meta’s results also illustrate the financial demands associated with developing AI capabilities, even with strong Meta revenue growth. The company is investing in models, infrastructure and related systems while maintaining its existing social media and advertising operations.

For business leaders, this raises a familiar strategic issue: how much should a company invest in emerging technology, and how should it assess the returns?

Large technology companies can spread infrastructure investment across enormous customer bases, but even they must manage the balance between future growth and present operating costs. Businesses with fewer resources need to be particularly careful about adopting technology because of competitive pressure rather than a clearly identified commercial need.

AI investment should be evaluated against specific objectives, such as improved productivity, better customer service, more effective marketing or new revenue opportunities. Without clear metrics, businesses may struggle to distinguish strategic investment from unnecessary spending.

Legal and Reputational Risk Remains Material

Meta’s reported legal charge underscores how regulatory and litigation issues can affect financial performance even when revenue is growing strongly.

The charge relates to an agreement announced earlier in 2026 with US state attorneys general concerning litigation about teen mental health and social media. The company’s results show how legal matters can create significant costs and affect reported profitability. Meta had already booked $2.40 billion of legal-proceedings charges in the second quarter, according to Verdict’s report on Meta’s second-quarter results, so legal costs have featured in more than one quarter this year.

For businesses operating digital platforms, consumer trust, safety and regulatory compliance are increasingly important considerations. A company’s technology and commercial success does not remove the need to address concerns about how its services affect users.

Brands advertising on major platforms should also consider how developments in content moderation, privacy, safety and regulation may affect their own reputational exposure. BrandiQ has examined one such risk in Meta’s new AI problem, where advertising becomes a back door for bad actors.

What Business Leaders Should Watch

Meta’s results offer two lessons. First, Meta revenue growth shows that established digital platforms can continue generating substantial revenue while investing heavily in new technology. Second, growth must be assessed alongside costs, regulatory exposure and the sustainability of future investment.

For marketers, the practical response is to measure platform performance using campaign-level data, even when Meta revenue growth is strong. For executives, it is to evaluate AI investments against business objectives and ensure that legal and reputational risks receive appropriate attention. The shift towards AI-led discovery, discussed in why brands must learn to be found by AI, makes that discipline more important.

BrandiQ Takeaway: Meta’s results demonstrate the continuing commercial strength of digital advertising, but they also show that Meta revenue growth does not eliminate the costs of innovation or the consequences of legal risk. Business leaders should balance technology ambition with financial discipline, measurable performance and responsible governance.
