Fintech company OPay has unveiled its eighth security feature, called Location Guard, as it continues its drive to ensure the protection of customers’ funds.

The new feature was unveiled on Friday at its office in Lagos, which also doubled as a reward ceremony for the OPay Security Challenge.

Before now, OPay had offered customers seven security features, including emergency lock, scam alert, night guard, large transaction shield, double confirmation, USSD lock and subscription control.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Commercial Officer of OPay, Elizabeth Wang, said, “Our mission is to make financial services more inclusive through technology. One of our core values is “always customers”.

I believe that for any customer, the top priority for any account is security. That’s why, at OPay, we invest a lot and will continue to do so in security products so we can protect our customers from any situation, any threat, and ensure the security of their funds.

“Every day we listen to our customers to understand what else they need. During this campaign, we also launched another product called Location Guard. This idea came from customers who said, “I live in Lagos; if somebody steals my phone and takes it to Ibadan or PH, what can I do?” Location is important. With Location Guard, you can set where you are; if your phone is used outside that location, we will lock it. Only your Face ID can unlock it.”

Present at the event were film producer/actress Funke Akindele and social media influencers Samuel Perry (Broda Shaggi), Layi Wasabi and Chukwuebuka Emmanuel, aka BrainJotter, who championed the campaign on social media.

The firm also announced the winners of its OPay Security Challenge across four social media platforms. On Facebook, Oluwatoyin Adegoke emerged tops and won N1m, Onyinye Ekeogu won the prize on Instagram, Greatness Ezeonwuka on X and Charles Lhugba got the N1m prize on TikTok.

On the campaign, Broda Shaggi said, “This is not just a campaign. This is an awareness for everybody using OPay, because in Nigeria, security is a very big problem. With an app like OPay, it is very easy for you to safeguard your account.”

BrainJotter disclosed that he has been enlightened during the campaign as he learnt about the security features.

“When they told me about the seven security features, I was wowed. When we were shooting the USSD lock campaign and we were educating some of the guys in the street, those our “senior men” were not happy that they could not move money from their account.”

Akindele commended OPay for thinking of the safety of customers’ funds.

“We thank you for thinking of your customers and protecting our money, because when your money is safe, you will be confident as you go about your day-to-day activities. I love to identify with brands like this, positive thinkers. People who think ahead. Thank you. I want you to keep working on leading in trust and innovation. It is very important. Don’t drop this down. Thank you.”

To her fellow creatives who worked on the campaign, she said, “To my colleagues who worked on this challenge, congratulations to us. Another feather in our cap; we did a great job. I enjoyed all the content. I watched everything. Thank you for rewarding the customers. You are protecting our money. You are giving us money again and engaging the young people.”
