Nigeria’s men’s basketball team enters the 2027 FIBA World Cup African qualifiers on Thursday with a clear warning in mind that the country cannot afford another painful World Cup absence.

After the Super Eagles failed to reach the men’s football World Cup, D’Tigers now carry the burden of restoring national pride and preventing a repeat on the basketball court.

The campaign opens in Tunis, where Nigeria face hosts Tunisia in their first Group C fixture on Thursday (today).

The group also contains Rwanda and Guinea, with Nigeria ranked second-highest in the pool behind Tunisia.

Both nations last appeared at the World Cup in 2019, and with only five African slots available for the 2027 finals in Doha, the margin for error is thin.

Head coach Mohammed Abdulrahman, speaking to PUNCH Sports Extra, acknowledged the urgency but insisted the team remain focused and motivated despite a fragmented build-up.

The squad arrived in Tunisia only hours before their first full training session, yet the coach played down concerns over preparation.

“We arrived yesterday and had a practice session this afternoon,” he said.

“All teams are faced with the same challenges. The season is on now for most foreign players and they can only have a few days away from their clubs.”

Nigeria have named a 12-man roster blending overseas experience with domestic quality, including former Afrobasket captain Ike Nwamu, guards Stan Okoye and Mike Nuga, and defensive anchor Christopher Obekpa.

Three home-based players also make the squad, including newly crowned national champions Chingka Garba and Obekpa Chris of Lagos Legends and Paul Dibal of Gboko City Chiefs. The side is confident of making an immediate impact.

“We will get a good start. It is the first window,” Abdulrahman said when asked what Nigerians should expect.

He confirmed that all players are in camp and praised the spirit in the squad.

“Pressure is a privilege. It is nothing new to these guys. They are in high spirits and ready to make Nigeria proud by picking all three games.”

Nigeria’s campaign unfolds in a demanding format that runs from November 2025 to March 2027.

Sixteen teams that reached Afrobasket 2025 have been placed into four groups, with the top three from each progressing to a second round.

Twelve teams will then compete across two groups of six, carrying forward all first-round results. Only the top two in each group and the best third-placed team will claim World Cup tickets.

Nigeria currently stand eighth in FIBA’s African power rankings, and the federation has stressed that these qualifiers are crucial to restoring the status once enjoyed by D’Tigers.

The last World Cup appearance in 2019 ended at the first round, and Nigeria failed to reach the 2023 edition.

The pathway is further complicated by the rise of sides such as Guinea, who finished ninth at Afrobasket 2025, and Rwanda, who see this window as an opportunity to reset their programme.

Tunisia, champions in 2011 and 2021, remain one of Africa’s most consistent teams and present Nigeria with the key matchup of the group.

The mission extends beyond the result of a single fixture for the D’Tigers. The broader aim is to avoid the kind of regression witnessed in Nigerian football, where instability and missed opportunities culminated in failure to reach the sport’s biggest stage in the country’s most followed sport.

With the football disappointment still fresh, the basketball team steps forward as the next national hope.
