Nigeria is entering a decisive phase in its digital evolution as the Federal Government finalises its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, now set for legislative approval.

According to the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, the policy is fully developed and will soon move into law – marking a major step toward structured AI governance in Africa’s largest economy.

A First-Mover Advantage in Africa

Nigeria has already achieved a key milestone:

  • Development of a government-backed large language model supporting local languages including Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and Ibibio

This positions the country at the forefront of localised AI development on the continent.

The 5 Pillars of Nigeria’s AI Strategy

  • Infrastructure (HPC centres, data centres, energy clusters)
  • Talent development (innovation hubs, Centres of Excellence)
  • Sectoral adoption (health, agriculture, finance, public services)
  • Ethical governance (fairness, transparency, accountability)
  • Regulatory frameworks

Strategic Context

Globally, AI leadership is being defined by:

  • Infrastructure readiness
  • Talent pipelines
  • Policy clarity

Nigeria is now attempting to align all three.

BrandiQ Take:
This is more than policy – it is a positioning move. Countries that define AI frameworks early will shape how value is created, captured, and regulated in the digital economy.
