Ghana’s visual communications and printing industry is entering a new phase of growth, fueled by expanding retail activity, urban development, and increasing demand for sophisticated branding and advertising solutions.

The country’s retail market, valued at approximately US$32 billion in 2023, is projected to grow significantly to US$54 billion by 2031, reflecting strong consumer spending and ongoing commercial expansion across major urban centers.

This growth is creating new opportunities for print service providers as brands intensify competition for visibility across retail spaces, commercial developments, and public environments.

Outdoor Advertising Drives Demand for Large-Format Printing

A major catalyst for the sector’s expansion is the continued growth of outdoor advertising.

Industry estimates indicate that outdoor advertising in Ghana generates roughly US$60 million annually, accounting for more than 20 percent of the country’s total advertising expenditure.

As companies seek to capture consumer attention through storefront displays, shopping mall branding, event graphics, and large-scale billboards, demand for high-quality large-format printing has increased significantly.

To remain competitive, many print providers are investing in modern production technologies capable of delivering faster turnaround times, versatile applications, and durable print outputs suited to West Africa’s climate conditions.

Technology Investment Strengthens Local Capabilities

Among the companies advancing Ghana’s print production capabilities is Chroma Digital Solutions, an Accra-based print service provider.

The company recently installed the Canon Colorado M5W wide-format printer, a move aimed at expanding its ability to produce premium retail displays, interior décor elements, and high-durability outdoor signage.

The installation represents one of the earliest deployments of the Colorado M5W technology in Africa, positioning the company to address growing demand for specialized print applications across multiple industries.

“In today’s market, clients expect speed, consistency, and the ability to handle everything from décor to large outdoor graphics,” said Kwame Owusu-Kwarteng, Operations Manager at Chroma Digital Solutions.

“Investing in the Canon Colorado M5W allows us to deliver all of this on a single platform. Its UVgel technology produces prints that can withstand heat and sunlight, while features such as white ink, matte-and-gloss finishes in a single job, and texture printing open new premium applications that were previously difficult to produce locally,” he added.

The system’s productivity and efficient ink usage also help control operational costs, a key consideration for businesses operating in Ghana’s competitive and price-sensitive market.

Evolving Market Encourages Value-Added Print Services

According to Canon, Ghana’s evolving economic landscape is prompting print businesses to expand beyond traditional printing services and move toward value-added solutions that support branding, retail experiences, and architectural design.

“Ghana is one of West Africa’s most dynamic visual communications markets,” said Tushar Vashnavi, Business Unit Director for B2B at Canon Central & North Africa.

“As the retail, infrastructure, and advertising sectors continue to grow, print businesses are investing in technologies that allow them to diversify their offerings, respond faster to customers, and operate more efficiently,” he said.

Vashnavi noted that advanced systems such as the Colorado M-series are designed to support this shift by combining productivity, application flexibility, and durability.

Local Support Key to Technology Adoption

Industry stakeholders also emphasize the importance of strong technical support and strategic guidance when introducing advanced printing technologies into emerging markets.

Canon Central & North Africa says that reliable local service networks play a critical role in ensuring companies can successfully integrate new production systems and maintain long-term operational efficiency.

For Chroma Digital Solutions, the transition to advanced equipment has already begun opening new opportunities.

As Ghana’s economy continues to diversify, demand for high-quality visual communication is expected to increase across sectors such as retail, real estate development, corporate branding, and events.

Industry analysts believe that companies capable of combining advanced technology, creative applications, and efficient production will be best positioned to capture the next wave of growth in Ghana’s expanding print and visual communications market.

For technologically advanced print providers, this shift represents an opportunity to move from traditional printing services to strategic branding and visual experience solutions that support the country’s rapidly evolving commercial landscape.
