Fintech giant combines scholarships, innovation, mentorship and internships in a long-term strategy to build digital talent for Nigeria’s technology economy

OPay has selected 48 outstanding student teams to advance to the next stage of its National Innovation Challenge, marking an important milestone in one of Nigeria’s largest private-sector initiatives aimed at nurturing technology innovation, entrepreneurship and digital skills among university students.

The competition forms part of the expanded OPay Scholars Programme, a comprehensive youth development platform that combines academic scholarships, innovation support and career development. Alongside the company’s ₦1.2 billion, ten-year scholarship programme and OPay Futures internship initiative, the National Innovation Challenge reflects OPay’s growing investment in building Nigeria’s future digital workforce.

Interest in the competition exceeded expectations. Between the opening of applications on 25 May and the closing date of 3 July, more than 2,200 teams, representing over 11,000 undergraduate students from tertiary institutions across Nigeria, submitted proposals addressing real-world challenges through technology-driven solutions.

Following an extensive evaluation process assessing originality, innovation, relevance and potential social impact, OPay shortlisted 48 teams for the next phase of the competition. The selected finalists include 24 teams from OPay’s partner institutions and 24 teams from non-partner institutions, demonstrating the company’s effort to ensure broad national representation irrespective of institutional affiliation. Each participating team comprises five students from the same institution.

The successful teams will now enter a six-week virtual mentorship and learning programme, during which participants will engage with professionals from OPay, Google and the Federal Government’s Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme through structured webinars, mentorship sessions and innovation workshops. The programme is designed to strengthen participants’ business models, refine their technological solutions and deepen their understanding of entrepreneurship before a second evaluation reduces the field to ten finalists.

Beyond the competition itself, OPay has created a pathway from innovation to employment. Students who achieve 70 per cent or higher in the programme’s assessment will qualify for a three-month internship through OPay Futures, providing practical industry experience with OPay and partner organisations while exposing participants to real business challenges within Nigeria’s digital economy.

Speaking on the initiative, Itoro Udo, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at OPay, said the overwhelming response confirmed the depth of technological talent among Nigerian youths.

“The response to the National Innovation Challenge has been truly inspiring. Seeing over 11,000 students come together to develop practical solutions to real challenges reinforces our belief that Nigeria has an incredible pool of young talent ready to shape the future through innovation,” she said.

According to OPay, the broader Scholars Programme seeks to support students throughout their development journey by combining financial assistance, mentorship, innovation opportunities and career readiness, ultimately preparing a new generation of technology professionals, entrepreneurs and digital leaders capable of contributing to Nigeria’s economic transformation.

BrandiQ Analysis

The OPay National Innovation Challenge reflects an important evolution in how leading technology companies approach workforce development. Increasingly, fintech firms recognise that sustainable growth depends not only on attracting customers but also on cultivating the talent ecosystem from which future innovators, engineers, entrepreneurs and business leaders will emerge. Rather than waiting for universities alone to produce industry-ready graduates, companies are becoming active participants in shaping educational outcomes and practical skills development.

The programme also demonstrates a growing convergence between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and business strategy. Traditionally, CSR initiatives were often evaluated primarily by their social impact or philanthropic value. Today, many leading organisations are designing programmes that simultaneously generate social value and strengthen long-term business competitiveness. By investing in scholarships, innovation, mentorship and internships, OPay contributes to national human capital development while also helping to expand the future pool of digitally skilled professionals required by Nigeria’s rapidly growing technology sector.

Equally significant is the programme’s emphasis on innovation rather than academic performance alone. Many scholarship initiatives reward existing academic excellence, but innovation challenges encourage students to identify practical societal problems, apply technology creatively and develop commercially viable solutions. This shift aligns with the changing demands of the digital economy, where employers increasingly value problem-solving, entrepreneurial thinking, collaboration and adaptability alongside formal academic achievement.

The involvement of Google and the Federal Government’s 3MTT Programme further illustrates the emergence of collaborative talent development models. Public institutions, multinational technology companies and domestic private-sector organisations are increasingly recognising that closing Nigeria’s digital skills gap requires coordinated rather than isolated interventions. Such partnerships can accelerate knowledge transfer, improve industry relevance and strengthen pathways between education and employment.

The diversity of projects selected also offers an encouraging glimpse into Nigeria’s innovation landscape. Solutions addressing healthcare, agriculture, education, fintech, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, logistics and community services demonstrate that young Nigerian innovators are increasingly applying technology to local development challenges rather than merely replicating existing global platforms. This reflects a maturing innovation ecosystem in which entrepreneurship is becoming more problem-driven and socially relevant.

From a strategic perspective, OPay is also strengthening its brand positioning. In an increasingly competitive fintech market where digital products are often easily replicated, long-term differentiation increasingly depends on trust, ecosystem leadership and societal contribution. By positioning itself as an enabler of education, innovation and youth development, OPay extends its corporate identity beyond financial technology into broader national development, enhancing both its reputation and stakeholder relationships.

What This Means for Nigeria’s Digital Economy

Nigeria possesses one of Africa’s youngest populations and one of its fastest-growing technology ecosystems. However, sustaining this momentum requires a continuous supply of highly skilled professionals capable of developing innovative digital solutions, launching technology ventures and supporting enterprise transformation.

Programmes such as the OPay National Innovation Challenge contribute to this objective by exposing students to industry mentors, practical innovation processes and entrepreneurial thinking before they enter the labour market. The internship pathway is particularly valuable because it helps bridge one of Nigeria’s most persistent challenges – the gap between academic knowledge and workplace readiness.

If replicated across multiple industries, similar initiatives could significantly strengthen Nigeria’s innovation capacity while supporting the Federal Government’s ambitions to build a knowledge-driven digital economy.

BrandiQ Verdict

The OPay National Innovation Challenge is more than a student competition; it is an investment in Nigeria’s future innovation economy. By integrating scholarships, technology innovation, mentorship and career development into a single ecosystem, OPay is helping redefine how corporations contribute to national development. In an era where talent has become one of the world’s most valuable economic resources, organisations that invest strategically in developing future innovators will shape not only their own competitive advantage but also the long-term resilience and prosperity of the economies in which they operate.
