NUGA 2025: UNIJOS Mother-Daughter Pair Clinch Squash Gold

A remarkable moment of sporting history unfolded at the ongoing 27th Nigeria University Games in Jos, as mother and daughter, Christabel and Charity Dasbak, delivered a golden performance for the University of Jos in the women’s doubles squash event, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The pair, whose partnership embodies a bond that extends beyond family ties, overcame strong competition from the Federal University of Technology, Akure to secure the gold medal, drawing loud cheers from the home crowd.

In addition to their doubles triumph, Christabel and Charity teamed up with Nanribet Dasbak and Patience Danjuma in the team event, where they defeated the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta 2–0 to further underline UNIJOS’s strength in squash.

Elsewhere in athletics, Ugbunne Pere of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, emerged winner of the men’s 400m final with a finishing time of 48.74s, with composure and pace in one of the most competitive track events of the day.

In football, the Federal University of Technology, Minna, booked their place in the semi-finals after a 2–0 win over the University of Ibadan, with a dramatic late goal sealing their progress.

The University of Lagos female football team, UNILAG Angels, also reached the semi-finals of the women’s event after defeating Ambrose Alli University 3–0, with goals from Oluwagbenga Kayinsola, Ivie Jr and Ambali.

Handball action produced thrilling contests across categories. In the men’s division, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, beat Bayero University, Kano, 18–14, while Taraba State University edged Lagos State University 15–13.

Ekiti State University defeated UNIJOS 16–14, and the University of Maiduguri narrowly beat Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University 16–15.

In the women’s matches, the University of Benin outclassed BOUESTI 20–7, UNIJOS edged Adamawa State University 5–3, and JOSTUM triumphed over the University of Uyo 10–7.

In martial arts, the trio of Losa Taiwo, Saubana Abdullahi and Ndaji-Oluchukwu Divine won a bronze medal in the men’s team karate taka event for UNILAG, as the Lagosians struggle to increase their medal haul across disciplines.

After six days of competition, Benson Idahosa University lead the medal table with 12 gold, two silver and no bronze medals, totalling 14.

Delta State University, Abraka, sit second with 20 medals, including nine gold, while the University of Ibadan dropped to third place with seven medals.

The host institution, UNIJOS, occupy seventh position with one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

The Games continue to deliver inspiring stories of teamwork and sportsmanship with the Dasbaks’ family triumph standing out as one of the most touching moments of NUGA 2025 so far.
