The expansion brings ChatGPT advertising to 89 countries, creating a new potential channel for brands seeking to reach consumers while they research products and compare options.

OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT advertising to 26 additional countries, including Nigeria and South Africa, bringing the total number of markets where the company says advertising is available to 89.

The announcement was published on October 21. OpenAI said more than 100,000 advertisers had run campaigns on ChatGPT since ChatGPT advertising launched just over eight months earlier. The company described the expansion as part of its effort to help businesses reach people while they explore ideas, compare options and make decisions. In an August update, OpenAI had said ChatGPT ads were available in more than 40 countries.

The new markets span Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Advertisers in the additional countries can access the platform through technology partners or self-service access via OpenAI’s Ads Manager.

The company said ChatGPT advertising will appear on the Free and Go plans, while Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions will remain ad-free. OpenAI also stated that advertisements will be clearly labelled and separated from the assistant’s answers, and that user conversations will remain private from advertisers.

ChatGPT Advertising Creates a New Environment for Consumer Discovery

Traditional digital advertising often reaches consumers as they browse websites, use social platforms, watch videos or search for information. ChatGPT introduces a different context: people can describe a need in their own words, ask follow-up questions and refine their preferences through conversation.

For marketers, that creates the possibility of reaching consumers during an active decision-making process. Someone exploring options for a new laptop, for example, may describe a budget, preferred features and intended use before deciding which products to consider.

OpenAI says ChatGPT advertising can help businesses introduce relevant products and services during these moments of consideration. The commercial opportunity will depend on how effectively the platform matches advertisements to user needs while maintaining a clear separation between advertising and the assistant’s responses. It also fits the wider shift described in The New Search Has Arrived, where brands must learn to be found by AI.

What ChatGPT Advertising Means for Nigerian Advertisers

The inclusion of Nigeria opens a potential new channel for local and international businesses. Nigerian brands may eventually use the platform to introduce products, promote services or reach consumers exploring particular categories.

However, availability alone does not establish whether the platform will be commercially effective for a specific advertiser. Businesses will need to understand the available formats, targeting options, buying arrangements, measurement capabilities and costs before allocating substantial budgets.

Advertisers should also distinguish between conversational discovery and conventional search advertising. The consumer may arrive with a loosely defined problem and use the conversation to refine what they want. That creates different demands for relevance, creative messaging and landing-page experience.

For a Nigerian business, a useful advertisement would need to provide a credible next step rather than simply interrupt the conversation. If a user is comparing products, the advertiser should ensure that the product information, pricing and availability presented outside the platform are accurate and current.

The Measurement Challenge for ChatGPT Advertising

As with any emerging advertising channel, the key question is whether it delivers incremental value. Advertisers will want to know whether ChatGPT ads reach customers they would not otherwise have reached, generate qualified enquiries and contribute to conversions.

OpenAI says it is continuing to develop new formats, objectives, buying options and measurement capabilities. This means the advertising ecosystem is still evolving. Marketers should therefore approach early campaigns as opportunities to learn rather than assume that results will match those of established platforms.

Campaign measurement will need to account for the full customer journey. A consumer may see an advertisement during a conversation, conduct additional research elsewhere and make a purchase later. Attribution systems must be capable of interpreting these interactions without overstating the contribution of a single touchpoint.

Trust and Brand Safety

Advertising inside an AI assistant raises important questions about trust. Consumers need to understand when content is sponsored and when the system is providing an independent response.

OpenAI says ads will be labelled and kept separate from answers. For advertisers, the long-term credibility of the channel will depend on how consistently these distinctions are maintained and whether consumers find the placements relevant rather than intrusive.

Brands should also ensure that their campaigns comply with applicable advertising rules and do not make claims that cannot be substantiated. Nigeria’s proposed rules on AI-generated promotions, examined in what the FCCPC rules could mean for brands, make that discipline more pressing, and platform-safety questions such as those in Meta’s new AI problem show why advertisers will want to know where their messages appear.

BrandiQ Takeaway: The expansion of ChatGPT advertising into Nigeria introduces another potential route to consumer discovery, but it should not automatically become a major media allocation. Marketing leaders should test the channel against clear objectives, assess incremental performance and protect consumer trust. The opportunity is to reach people at a moment of active consideration; the challenge is to prove that the placement creates real commercial value.
